The best thing I ever did a few years ago was get a mandarin tree for a Christmas tree. I went out to an orchard to buy one that would fit in the car, set it up in the lounge and decorated it (it was a bit naff tbh) and after Christmas, I planted it in the garden. My thinking was that instead of spending money on a tree which would have to be thrown out, why not buy one which I could plant and grow and we could benefit from the fruit. Well, there was nothing in terms of fruit really for the first few years, a few mandarins last year but this year... This year, a terrific haul of free, organic fruit. And they are so delicious. Unfortunately, I never got around to doing the fruit Christmas tree thing again - I am guessing that I did this maybe in 2019 before Covid? I can't remember, and tbh there is only so much space where you can put a tree anyway. But I am very happy with this beauty and its truly glorious bounty!
