We had a great sporty weekend watching the Formula One in Baku, Azerbaijan, and then the NRL Preliminary Grand Final between the Penrith Panthers and the Newcastle Knights.
I wanted the Panthers to win but the Knights fairytale story was incredible. Bottom of the ladder last year and now they are in next week's Grand Final. It truly is a fairytale and whatever happens next week, it was one memorable Semi-Final.
I've long admired the dedication of sports player, (oh my gosh the physical pain they must endure so much of the time, the ups and the downs, the brilliant highs and the super bad lows!) and I chose sports stars for two main characters in books; players at the end of their careers.The book I'm now working on, A Sweet Tomorrow, (publication: October, Book 4 in Clearlake County) features a former American football star, now managing players.
In Marrying Michelle, the hero, Luke Slater, is a former Kiwi rugby player. His career is over and he faces the new challenges of post-playing life as he seeks to find the next steps in his career. His manager, Dave Bird, is a father figure to him, and Dave has an idea to help him navigate the biggest of those challenges: one that will be life changing. He hires his free-spirited niece, Michelle 'Mitchy' Bird, to work with Luke. Mitchy is the last person to fall for a rugby player of all people, but when you've got the two of them working together closely, and getting to learn about each other, and actually starting to like each other... anything can happen!
